| Nice | going around in NICE Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 06:53 AM UTC
I am going to be staying at Hotel Danemark (53437), Nice, 3 av des baumettes, Nice, 06000. Can you please guide me on a three day routine in NICE. What is the best and the cheapest way to go to old city and other destinations in & around NICE. I shall highly appreciate it.
Many thanks in advance Great Regards Pradeep |

It's in the west of Nice, very far from the Old Town, however there will be a bus to go into town, walking in Nice is great, have a look at the public transport network map

The 2 trips we did in our 4 night stay in Nice were to Monaco and Entrevaux. Monaco was by bus and cost about 1 Euro each way (trains were on strike that day) and the bus does take a very spectacular route.
Entrevaux was by the Chemis de Fer du Provence a narrow gauge rail line that goes from its own station about 500 metres inland from the main Nice rail station. Our other day in Nice we explored the old town by foot. There are plenty of local buses if distances are too big for you - just ask at hotel reception.

Do you happen to know if they used the same system as in Bordeaux where the trams (trollies) run on overhead power for most of the route and then switch over to battery for the more historic part of town? BTW had a quick look through some of your travel pages and congratulations on all.

I'm counting on the new trolley system working. We're landing in Nice Wednesday and I want to try the new trolley. According to all I've read, it is operable. We're not picking up our car until we leave town so if it isn't working, back to the bus . . . LOL
Did you check NiceLife's Travel Pages on Nice? They are fabulous.

My wife and I recently returned from Nice, where we rented an apartment at 1 Ave. des Baumettes. You will be 1 block from the ocean and a 15 minute walk to the old city. The best way to navigate the city is by bus. Fares are only 1 euro. If you are arriving by plane, take the #23 bus (1 euro) from Terminal 2 to Blvd. Francois Grosso. Your hotel is 1/2 block away. Get a bus map (free) at the the tourist office.

One thing I wouldn't do is take one of those little tour trains (the ones that looks like kiddie trains, not the real trains that go to other cities) in Nice. They take you through part of the old city, bring you up a mountian to an over-priced restaurant (supposedly for the view, which, although beautiful is not a must-see), stop for 45 minutes so you spend money there, and then bring you back down. With three days, you don't want to waste time on it.
If you're an architecture person, Nice is a dream come true. Obviously, pretty much any place in France is great for looking at architecture, but I feel that Nice really stands out in that area. Every time I'm there, I try to take at least half a day and get myself lost in a residential section just to look at the homes.

We did do that and found it quite good - that hill is a killer (unless your REALLY fit). The train as you said does stop at the top. We got off there and caught the next train going down and took in the view. Apparantly the hill used to have a fort on top but it got blown up about 400 years ago. I reckon some guy dissapeared into a place to have a quiet smoke and chucked his butt into the pile of fuses etc for their cannons - boom - great way to give up smokes - LOL

Nice is very walkable. Old town is great to wander through. The markets, shops and cafes are great.
