Las Vegas Trying to choose a hotel...Luxor, MGM Grand or Mandalay Bay?
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 05:32 PM UTC
I am trying to chooses between these few hotels. The Luxor has the best prices, which has great appeal to me, but it is at the far end of the strip (not as close as i would like to be)and i have heard that they're rooms aren't that nice. The MGM Grand looks really fun, but it is SO big! I don't want to spent all of my time lost in my hotel. lol. The Mandalay Bay is beautiful but also very expensive. I don't want to spent that much money and end up disappointed. Any advice would be great. Thank you!

Of the 3 Luxor is closer to mid strip. Try the Flamingo

You need to decide what quality of hotel you want. I personally would never stay at the Flamingo. I personally think if a person was considering a hotel such as the Mandalay Bay, they would be dissapointed with the Flamingo, Sahara, Stratosphere etc. The Luxor is showing a bit of age now days, but kids still love it. If you are considering the Mandalay Bay and the Luxor, it's kind of like considering, a Best Western to a Marriot. You might save 3 minutes of traveling time if you stay at the Luxor, so don't let location decide for you out of those three hotels. There's a free monorail that connects Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur. I would decide between Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand. Mandalay Bay is has nicer rooms and a beautiful wave pool (however it's a crowded pool area). MGM Grand has a large pool area made up of multiple pools and a lazy river. Some of the best shows and restaurants are located at the MGM Grand as well. The size is big, but not confusing, you won't have a problem after the first day finding your elevator entrance. I'd say if you can save $30+ a night by staying at the MGM Grand vs. Mandalay Bay, do it. If you want some show recommendations, I'd suggest Le Reve, Cirque Du Soleil KA, and Phantom of the Opera. The reason I spoke earlier about the pools, is because the heat during the summer makes it really hard to walk around during the day, so you'll find yourself lounging by the pool and going out at night.

MGM- it's fun, walking and tram distance to others, visit Luxor to see the decor- visit most of the casinos, including Caesar's Palace and the shopping there-gawking is free!
A backstage tour, usually given by one of the showgirls is very interesting and informative, and there are free shuttles to Laughlin, I believe. Vegas can be inexpensive if you don't gamble! There are many interesting sights at night, but I would suggest if you are walking, walk with friends and observe common sense guidelines- don't drink and go off with strangers, don't stay anywhere that makes you feel uncomfortable, don't flash wads of cash , keep track of your beverage at all times, etc- have fun, though.

Hmmmmm.
Ok if you want to save the ost money. You stay at the Luxor Make sure you get a room in the pyramid Those rooms are not bad. If you get on in the tower. Try to get a strip view room. It is not really far from the strip. The strip is moving south. You can ride the momorail to the other side if you like.
The MGM Is nice just You will not get lost in there. It is not too bead to get around. Mandaly bay is very nice. But like you said it costs the most. Depending on how much you want to spend.
All in all they are all great choices.

We were at the Mandalay Bay about a month ago, and we were disappointed.

We had reserved a non-smoking room with a view of the strip.
When we arrived, we were given a smoking room with a view of the strip. It reeked, so they moved us to a non-smoking room with a view of a parking lot. We saw that and complained, and the desk clerk had the gall to tell us that reservations were not guaranteed, that we could only have what was available, even though I had paid for the reservations weeks before.

The there was the pool. It has a wave machine which they advertise as generating three foot waves. It doesn't. They are barely two feet high and virtually unridable.
The 'beach' around the pool has loudspeakers everywhere, playing rap music. After 10 minutes of "...THUMPA THUMPA THUMPA ...this motherf***** n****** don't take no s***...THUMPA THUMPA THUMPA", we left.

Our room had a refrigerator. However, it was filled with their food which we could buy at rediculous prices. There was no room for our food. There was no coffee maker.

Of the three I'd favour MGM Grand. Getting to mid-strip (Bellagio, Caesars, Venetian etc) is easier as there is a monorail station at MGM that will take you all the way up to the Sahara. There are also walkways across the Strip to New York - New York and across Tropicana.

Have a great trip

The MGM is also my choice. The monorail is there. It's fast and inexpensive.

I don't gamble, but was able to find plenty of things to do while there. I seen the show at Treasure Island, went to the Hoover Dam, and explored many hotels. I also went downtown to Fremont Street and seen the light show. It was really neat!

When choosing a room keep in mind you will spend very little time in it. So go with what gives you the amenities you want at the best price.

All of these hotels are practically in the same area. In my opinion, the monorail gets really old... you have to walk all... the... way... through the MGM (or whatever casino you're getting on at) and it seems like it would just be easier, and cheaper, to walk up Las Vegas Blvd. than pay to get on a monorail you have to wait around for and that has everyone's disgusting germs all over.

That being said, I've stayed at all three at would recommend Mandalay Bay. The level of ambience and service seems better there. Luxor is OK if it's much cheaper, but it is showing signs of age, service is lousy, and there's nothing cool about it anymore. I've been in a pyramid room (haven't stayed in one) and they are rather basic. The tower rooms are pretty decent and somewhat spacious... at least upgrade to that if it's a good deal, or just ask the front desk clerk very nicely when you check in. During the summer, it's much slower, so you're more likely to get a good deal on an upgrade or beg your way into one for free (or for a tip).
