Vienna Japanese food in Vienna?
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 05:14 PM UTC
Can anyone give recommendations and/or warnings concerning Japanese food and restaurants in Vienna?
Travelling solo every now and then I have this strange habit of checking the Japanese food selection - in addition to the local specialities, of course.

FYI: This far the worst experience has been in Finland and the most recent positive one was in Morocco....

Danke viemals!

Out of 400 "Japanese" restaurants in Paris, only about 80 are genuine. I expect it is the same in Vienna, and the world over.

Recommendation: Lemon Green in Döblinger Hauptstraße 52, 19th district, tram no. 37 (from Schottentor in the city centre) to Guneschgasse.
Asian food in general: Li's Cooking at Naschmarkt, basically on the Linke Wienzeile-side, more or less right across the street from Mocca Club. It is always packed for a very good reason!

Seoul in Praterstraße 26 in 2nd district is fine for sushi at least.

Akakiko, with restaurants all over Vienna, is generally ok, sometimes really good, occasionally slightly disappointing.

The best japanese fast food option is Tekaway Sushi at the Karlsplatz underpass (walk down from the Opera, it is next to a bakery by the U1 entrance). The surrounding is dodgy, as are the guests sometimes, too, but the turnover is so high that you are so to speak guaranteed great quality.

Warning: Yugetso in Führichgasse next to Albertina (close to the Opera) is not good at all, despite all the japanese guests.

In Vienna & getting the munchies for sushi or Japanese treat in general ? The following places are recommendable:

Banyan (Nussdorfer Straße 22, 1090 Wien)
Located in the "Alte Markthalle" (Old Market), nice terrace and extensive menue. Ideal also for vegetarians.

Sohyi Sushi (Schlagergasse 9, 1090 Wien)
Close to the Volksoper, one Tatami-style dining room and one "european-style" room for guests with weak knees ;-) Good choice of sushi, kithcen from Osaka.

Both places are in the 9. district, that's the neighbourhood where I lived. Have been eating in both places often enough so consider this reference as long-term quality study :-)

The Akakiko chain in Vienna is quite famous. It was founded by a Japanese woman and the food there is less pricy than in other eateries. Kind regards!
