| Highland | Summer Holidays in Scotland: help! Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 04:48 PM UTC
Hi all!
I'm planning my 7-day trip to Scotland in August, and I need your help :) I'll arrive at Edinburgh airport, then I will drive to Duror af Appin, where I'll stay for 4 nights to explore the West Highlands area. After that, I'll move to Dunfermline; I'll stay there for the remaining 3 nights visiting Edinburgh, Stirling and also St. Andrews. Do you have any suggestions for my itinerary? I've only booked the flight, the car and the B&Bs, but still have to choose the places to see... Your advice are welcome! Thanks in advance, bye! KIARA |

I can recommend 2 smaller towns nearby Dunfermline:
- Aberdour, located on the shore of the Firth of Forth, just opposite Edinburgh. One of the main sights in town is Aberdour Castle, built in the 14th century. Its Black Sands Beach is called Scotland’s Riviera. (http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/tfr/1/f8/4/181ab3/) - Culross, very close to Dunfermline: an almost medieval village with coble stoned streets; just stroll around and walk úp the hill to the church and the ruins of an abbey. You could climb to the top of Britain's tallest mountain - Ben Nevis, and located near Fort William. Its not at all a technical climb and can be done by anyone in a reasonable state of health. The views and scenery will be absolutely stunning for the entire walk, just pick the best day for weather.
http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/fortwilliam/ Oban is also a nice town and it is possible to get a ferry to some of the Islands from there, Mull is quite close. http://www.calmac.co.uk/summer-timetable.html?id=s Edinburgh is worth taking as much time as possible, you may well be there at Festival time 8 - 31st August when the place is buzzing. Every establishment that has a space, however small, puts on a show for the Fringe - that is the unofficial (and better in my opinion) part of the festival. Loads of up & coming as well as established performers will be there, comics & actors etc. No need to book in advance just find out whats on on the day & get tickets for later. Also loads of street entertainment etc. http://www.edfringe.com/ Enjoy your trip

As above, or maybe the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig.
