| Stockholm | best hotel in Gamia Stan old town stockholm Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 03:44 PM UTC
Will be spending a WEEK in Stockholm May 31 to June 7, 2008. Help with hotel suggestions and location. Have been looking at Old Town.... also the expensive SAS Raddision Strand... love the hotel pics but price is 'outta sight! (unless anyone knows of a discounted web site!) Should we concentrate in the Gamia Stan
area or or or???? Like bright, airy, large room for two. Also, is a week too long and should we head out to??? for a night or two?? Love to shop, roam, pub crawl, cafes, people watch. |

I think a week is just right to spend down there (I live north of Stockholm), but I don't think you should pay for the Radisson. Since I don't need a hotel when visiting, I can't recommend anything else than the Fridhemsplan hostel (that I read about on the paper, I see it also has good reviews in tripadvisor.com). http://www.fridhemsplan.se/?p=Main&c= - Fridhemsplan has great connections to the city center, and if you want to go from there to the Old Town you just take the green subway line southbound (towards Farsta strand, Hagsätra or Skarpnäck) and get off 3 stops later.
I don't know if you're coming alone, but a single private room (shared bathroom) costs 500 SEK per night, not including the bed sheets and towel (50 SEK extra) or buffet breakfast (60 SEK per day per person). If you want to have private bathroom in your room, you book one of rooms in the category "Hostel plus" for 600 SEK per day, not including the bed sheets and towel or buffet breakfast (same prices as the private room).

I'm sorry, I just reread that there's 2 of you coming. In that case the prices are:
Private twin room, shared bathroom: 325 SEK per person per night Double/twin room, private bathroom (hostel plus): 850 SEK per room per night To this you add, regardless of the room you choose: Bed sheets+towel: 50 SEK Buffet breakfast: 60 SEK per person per day

I stayed in Gamla Stan for three nights over Easter - I would definitely recommend it for convenience and atmosphere.
The best deal I found was for the Lord Nelson hotel, which was nice, full of character but absolutely tiny! However, if I hadn't gone with my father (requirements - two rooms, 'nice' hotel), I would probably have gone for a hostel bed on one of the boats that's moored up nearby. Have a look at hostelbookers to see what I mean. I'm not sure how possible spacious room is on a budget in this city. I looked but I didn't find. In fact, Stockholm seems to specialise in budget rooms that look great until you find they have no windows! I saw this several times on lastminute.com and the rest. One hotel I considered for the same price as the Lord Nelson was the Birger Jarl - not in the Old Town but fairly central and it looks very bright and modern. The rooms may be bigger there. There are a few reviews on VT for this one.
