Boston Best way to get from Boston to NYC
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 02:58 PM UTC
Hi,
I'm going to Boston for work from 7th to 14th June. Pity I didn't get confirmation earlier or I could have got some Red Sox tickets... anyway, I decided to stay in NYC until the 19th and fly back from JFK. What's the best way to get to NYC on public transport?

The cheapest way is to take a "Chinese bus". The trip Boston to NYC is $15 .
"Fung Wah Bus Co" is a Chinatown Bus co, you can google its name to access their reservation website. RESERVE EARLY:SUCH CHEAP SEATS ARE IN HIGH DEMAND!

You can also google "chinese bus"for other companies.

Train is also possible, it's a direct route and takes about 3 - 4 hours. Gets you into Penn Station New York which is pretty handy. A nice relaxing ride. See the Amtrak site for details.

Two above options are great. You also can use Greyhound bus. Or you can fly shuttle.
It all depends on your budget.
I prefer train, but it is not cheap.
I used Greyhoud bus few times, and it was ....long, boring, and lots of highway traffic.
You could also rent (one way) car. This way you can take scenic route 1 and see few nice places, like Newport, Mistyc etc. I have done it few times with my own car and it is quite nice.

PLEASE NOTE: The Fung Wah Bus is NOT the safe way for you to go. Their safety record is horrible and it should not be a recommendation for anybody, even if you want to save a few bucks. The Greyhound online-purchased fare is within a few dollars of Fung Wah's price and the odds of reaching your destination safely are much higher.

I wouldn't take Fung Wah either. You can take Lucky Star, another bus company. Same price: $15 one way. It takes about 4 hrs. The bus terminal in Boston is at South Station. To get to Lucky Star, go past the Greyhound counter and gates. It's at the very end of the gates. You can purchase your tickets on the spot (cash only I think). Get there at least 30 mins before.

I wouldn't rent a car. Besides high gas prices, you'd have to find a place to park it in NYC ($$$) and you'd have to do a one-way rental (more $$$). $15 one-way bus ride - can't beat that. What a deal!

I would either take the Train which gets yoou there fairly quickly and isnt to pricey. Another option would be to rent a car, and drive down to CT and take the Metro North Railroad. Parking in NYC is rediculous, and if you park at these rail stations, its really cheap, and maybe even free. The train is like a commuter train out of NYC and goes into Grand Central. I personally drive to South Norwalk, CT and then take the train in from there. Real easy to do..
Good luck.

Thanks for all your good advice :) I decided to fly in the end to save on journey time and it was only slightly more expensive than the train.
