The highlights in Bangkok (in my opinion):
- Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo - Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha and traditional Thai massage) - Wat Arun - Golden Mount / Giant Swing - Klong Tour - Visit a floating market - Chinatown - Jim Thompson's House - Vimanmek Palace (if time allows) - really off the beaten path: biking in Bangkok - a half day guided tour (www.bangkokbiking.com) - if you like: some shopping Happy travels Jaap

HI! Jon:
If you are in BKK on a weekend, check out Chatuchak weekend market as long as you don't mind the heat and humidity. I always thought Somboon Seafood is a must if you like seafood. Have a page on BKK should you care to take a look and see if the tips are any useful.

If you are never been to Bangkok just start from the basic: (a) visit the temples and palace of the Royal Bangkok and (b) check out the life along the Chao Phraya River and the canals of Thonburi.
About the Royal Bangkok, top sights are the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (hosted in the same complex) and the temple Wat Pho, at a short-walk distance, with the Reclining Buddha. You can then use your time to explore the River Chao Phraya and the canals of Thonburi. Hire a long-boat and do the canals tour because it is worth. On the way, you can stop at Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn), another one-of-the-many landmarks Bangkok. The itinerary above will take from one full-day to two days, depending on your pace. If you enjoy markets and if you are in town in the weekend days, as suggested already, do not miss the Chatuchak Weekend Market, an overwhelming and colorful market with every kind of goods for sale. It's in the city's outskirts, allot at least a full half-day. You will need a taxi or other similar transportation to get there. Enjoy Bangkok! Giuseppe

Hi
The largest market is the Chatuchak Weekend Market, just catch the Skytrain to the end station, go early so you get there by 10am , over 9,000 stalls. There is also the Patpong night market which has the added attraction of being alongside the well known entertainment district. I recommend you take a ride on the River Taxis, great experience and cheap, you will get an appreciation of old bangkok as you go along the Klongs. You can use the river taxi to get to the Grand Palace. If you like shopping and markets you must visit the MBK department store, really an indoor market with hundreds of stalls selling clothing, electronics, dvd's and CD etc etc. Also is a good place to get a cheap meal, safe eating. Just catch the Skytrain to Siam. If you are into technology visit the Computer Building at Pratunam, an 8 story building full of small shops selling everything electronic, bargain prices, known as Pantip Plaza on Thanon Phetburi. We always have one meal at the Sanghri La Hotel on the banks of Chayo Praya river, great food , wonderful view of river and activity. Easy to get to, just catch the Skytrain to the river (end of line) and then a 3 minute walk. Recommend you research VT pages, particularly those of members who have replied. Good Luck, Mike
