I will be visiting Varadero in July and would just like to ask which currency is the best to use ie. most widely accepted.I will be travelling from the UK.

Euro would get you the good rate. Pounds sterlings are changeable easily also in big cities and at Cambios which are called CADECAs. in any case they charge 11 per cent to change the foreign currency into CUC, which is the currency for the tourists. The best advice is Dont bring US dollars, you will loose a lot in the transaction. Also dont bring credit cards which are issued by american banks even if they are issued elsewhere. I have a Barclays Card that I use exclusively in Cuba. with no problem.

Yes i also would take euro with me and change it there..and please no american visa cards..i met a view people over there who run out of money thinking they could use the visa card.. In Varadero you will be most likely all-inclusive so you wont need much money anyways..have a great time

I found Barclays Sterling travellers checks accepted in Havana, Varadero and Playas del este without any problems, just make sure you take the orginal purchase reciepts with you.

Load up your visa (non American) and draw from it at International banks, hotels, cambios etc.. beats packing cash. I took euros and exchanged them at the airport to get me started and then drew off my visa.
