Budapest Accommodation Outside Central Budapest
Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 10:26 PM UTC
Hi. I wonder if anyone could recommend any reasonable hotels (or apartments) on the outskirts of Budapest or even in a town close to Budapest.

We'll be travelling to Budapest by car, and do not wish to take it into central Budapest. Ideally we are looking for a hotel that is about 20 - 30 minutes from central Budapest.

I'm probably asking for too much, but it would be good if the hotel/apartment was in walking distance (10 minutes or so) of a metro stop or station and in a safe area.

Many thanks

Hotel Budapest could very well suit your needs

See my Budapest pages for a review and also go here

From memory it is only a short walk to the metro from the hotel

My recomendations
1. Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitsziget
http://www.danubiushotels.com/en/budapest-hotels/danubius-health-spa-resort-margitsziget-budapest
Hotel is located in a safe area, on the Margaret Island, between Pest and Buda, on the River Danube in the middle of the city, in walking distance (10 minutes or so) of metro-line 3. The island is car-free but hotel guests may enter the island into own garage of the hotel. It is not cheap - avarage daily rate 120 - 160 Eu/room

2. Hotel Stadion - Budapest
http://www.danubiushotels.com/en/budapest-hotels/hotel-stadion-budapest
Hotel is located in a safe area, in the near of the Puskás Ferenc Stadium, the László Papp Sportarena, has a covered parking lot, and in walking distance (2 minutes or so) of metro-line 2, ("Stadionok" Station), avarage daily rate 60 - 80 Eu/room

I guess I am curious why you don’t want to bring your car into Budapest? A lot of hotels have parking garages or other accommodations. What price range do you want?

Thank you for your replies. There are some great possibilities there.

ossian99: I guess there are two reasons why we don't want to take our car into central budapest -

1) We don't want to get caught in any traffic jams
2) More importantly, we won't be familiar with the roads. We'll have maps (and sat nav), but from experience, driving in central parts of unknown cities (especially when busy), can be very stressful.

I actually refuse to drive in unfamiliar countries -- PERIOD. It’s my vacation and I want to relax and not have to worry about it. However, about a month ago we had hired a guide/driver to take us around Romania. Had a wonderful time until it was time to catch the train to Budapest. It looked like the Hungarian rail service would be on strike and I didn’t want to get stranded at the border. Our Romanian driver, a great kid, was up to an adventure so he volunteered to take us to Budapest in his new Dacia. Besides being a wonderful drive through the country I was amazed at how easily we followed the road signs into Budapest straight to the hotel (just off Andrassy ut.) without one wrong turn, and with out much hassle with the traffic - and it was about 4 in the afternoon. The only advantage we had was that I am very slightly familiar with some of the tourist areas. We may have been lucky, because all I hear are complaints about Budapest traffic. It just seems a shame to not be in the middle of it when in Budapest. The evenings, lights, walks, cafes, etc can be so beautiful; and for me very comfortable and a lot of what I go for. But I do understand.
