| London | Train or subway in London Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 12:48 AM UTC
Hi everyone,
Could you please advice me with the website that I can download or see the train or subway map for London? and what public transport system is the most commonly used in London? I am going to London next month, so just wanting to plan ahead with my first exciting London trip. Much appreciated! |

The 'people in London' speak no more 'strangely' than anywhere else.
However, there now are many, many Londoners who do not originate in Britain, so you can expect to meet/be served by people from all over the world. Both Tube (subway) and buses are commonly used within London. Details here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/default.aspx Public transport in the UK is not cheap, so you should consider buring either a travel pass or an Oyster card. These only work within London itself: you will need to pay for transport to/from the airport. Ticket/pass/Oyster card info here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/default.aspx There is a journeyplanner here: http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/XSLT_TRIP_RE which will tell you how to get from your hotel (put in the postcode), or any other spot in Lodond, to wherever you want to go. Do be prepared to walk as well.Much of central London is very walkable, and you will see lots more by doing so. The buses and Tube can become very crowded, especially in rush-hour, so get a good streetmap and walk if it is feasible to do so.

I think the accent of London English (if there's such) is cute.

London is cool, so cool that I've convinced the hubby that we should visit it together (he's always thought that London is overrated *infidel!*).

London is typical of many large cities with a metro.
The underground subway system known as the 'tube' is network of rail lines and trains that cross the centre of London. The tube network is extensive, stretch way beyond the suburbs into the countryside. Outside of central London is emerges from its tunnels and runs on the surface. Many people, especially those that live in North London use only the tube. London also has a ring of main rail stations for commuter trains and fast intercity trains. Most English Londoners live way out in the suburbs or in surrounding towns. They take the train to a mainline station, then change to the tube. The tube does not run to many parts of South London and so this there the train is the only way to get into town fast. There are also the buses, these are frequent and cheap and they are the only way to get home after the tubes and trains close for the night at 00:30. Unless you take a taxi, which is hideously expensive. Most tourists stay in central London and use the tube, though some of the stations are very close together and it is quicker to walk. Learn how to use the buses, it is quite a good system. Here are the maps: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/1106.aspx You will also find some geographical maps amongst my tips. Learning how to get around London is great fun. There is a lot of help, it is the most signposted city in the world.

Hi hubby 7 i used the subway in London in 2004 we thought it would be a nightmare as Sydney systems aren't anywhere near as complicated looking. We rode on a coloured line & then crossed to the next colour it was SO SIMPLE we enjoyed it & will be visiting again in June do the subway it's a great way to get around.

But don't call it a subway in the UK, because subways here are ways to cross roads by going in a tunnel underneath them.
Call it the Tube. :-)
