It will depend on what you want to see or do. Usually, you're not. Guatemala City is the only place I would call a real city, all the other towns are not that big and if you stay around the tourist areas you'll be alright, as long as you don't do stupid things.

This aside, you'll see tourists all over Guatemala... so if you don't trust yourself, you better follow them or join them.

With the large number of tourists in Guatemala, chances are you'll be able to travel safely on a DIY trip. Sticking to main areas (Antigua, Lake Atitlan, Tikal, Coban, etc.) will definitely allow you to remain relatively safe, as safe as you can be traveling. Just keep your common sense about you. I traveled through the country alone for 3 weeks last year and encountered nothing but friendly people and wonderful experiences.

I just got back from a week in Guatemala traveling alone. I stayed six days in Antigua and took three tours from there to other cities which are popular with tourists. Moderately priced shuttles to these destinations were filled mostly with tourists from all over the world: Europe, South America, the United States, Israel, etc. I felt fairly safe, however I did meet another traveler who said he was robbed at gunpoint when he took a hike away from the city center of Antigua.

I also spent two days in Zone One of Guatemala City where I saw very few other touristst. That area is very interesting but a bit sketchy and I did not feel as safe there.

A tour would be the safest way to go. I was told in Guatemala City that 97.7 percent of tourists to Guatemala have no problems. If that is so, then about one in 300 visitors do have an unpleasant incident.

My friend and i will be Guatemala in later May. We’re thinking of find a reliable local travel agency which offers a great deal for tours to different regions of Guatemala. Do you have any recommendations for any travel agency in Antigua? Is travel agency open on Sat? We will arrive on Sat.

Thanks,

Stephanie
