Berlin Places to stay in Berlin
Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 05:20 PM UTC
Hi:
I'll be visiting Berlin for four days in late july. It will be the first time I go there, arriving at Tegel Airport, and I'm trying to make up my mind about where to stay, on a tight budget (around 100 dollars per night).
I've been reading comments of several hotels, and those on that price range always seem to have an issue with toilets and room space (too little, not comfortable...).
Of course, I would also like to be somewhere that is close to the visiting places, or close to them by public transport (don't we all ;) )
So if you have any tips, I'll appreciate it.

I think that hotel rooms in Europe are often much smaller than those in the US, which is why some visitors can find rooms rather cramped.

As I use my room for sleeping, and spend the rest of the time exploring, it's not a problem for me (and UK hotel rooms aren't any bigger anyway).

Have a look at www.booking.com and www.venere.com: both sites are reliable and have honest guest reviews.

Also look at the official tourist ifo site on:

http://www.visitberlin.de/index.en.php

which will, almost certainly, list most/all accommodation in the city.

We enjoyed our stay at the Park Inn on Alexanderplatz. It was really well situated, in the old East Berlin and walking distance from the station (trains from airport come here).

The rooms were very small but the entire hotel had been refurbished to a high standard and we found it quite satisfactory. Worth checking out.

Have a look here:

http://www.pension-guesthouse-berlin.de/1-single-room-standard.htm

Compared to hotels in the U.S., rooms are almost always smaller, at the same time often cleaner.

The guesthouse I mentioned above is very affordable (so rooms are even smaller, yes), clean, and the location is difficult to beat.

Check out offers on www.wotif.com

Thanks to this system we got a room at Hotel Steglitz International (see on my Berlin page) at a very affordable rate, and the room was not smaller than any in the US I have stayed in.

If you don't need any service, you may try an appartment?
Here http://www.apartmentsapart.com/berlin_hotels/index.htm they are available from 50 euro the night, normally in a innercity area and not that small as hotel rooms.

There's loads of apartments very cheap and you'll live amongst locals and get a real taste of the city. If you're interested in cafes, bars, clubs, restaurants, flea markets and good transport links Friedrichshain is a good place to be based. You can get to the centre easily and there is so much to do in the area. A good budget apartment in the area can be found at www.berlinplace.com
Enjoy your trip
