I have to go to Milan for business in June. I have a day off on Sunday and would like to go on a day trip (by train?) to somewhere scenic in the mountains. Any suggestions?
Cheers :)

ciao!!! i can siggest to go to Como or Lecco, they are 2 smmal city on the lake surronded by the moutains, as a city Como is nier then Lecco, but as mountain scenary i think Lecco is better, they aren't so far from Milan , both the city it takes about 45 min. by train, ad it's so easy to reach them
anyway check out this site www.aptlecco.it , unfortunately is just in italian version, but u can help u about what to do in Lecco, and it tells abiut hiking as well...

You could definitely have a wonderful time if you take the train to Lake Como. It's easy to walk around the city and then take a boat trip up the lake to some of the beautiful towns along the shoreline... Bellagio etc. I think that area is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, especially this time of year.

A one hour train journey from Milan central will take you to Varenna in the centre of Lake Como.... my favourite holiday destination. The trains are approx every hour.....and time table found at

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

From Varenna you can take the 15min ferry ride across to Bellagio, again frequent but like most transport in Italy a reduced service on Sunday.

Info on Varenna can be found at

http://www.varennaitaly.com/english.html

I am going back in late June...you never know I'll maybe see you!

According to others Vt-members Como is a good day trip easily reach by train from Milan. Another good day trip is on Lago Maggiore. You can take the train from Cadorna Station to Laveno. There you can make a journey on a ferry and reach the two beautiful islands of the lake: Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island) and Isola Bella (with the fantastic Palazzo Borromeo).
Enjoy your trip!

Turns out I'll have 3 days of holiday. Now I can't decide between Laveno and Lecco. I really enjoy hillwalking, but wont have gear with me for mountaineering. So I'll probably take a couple of day walks from either centre. Any suggestions of where to chose?
Thanks for your help :)

Why not Bergamo's mountain? Direct buses from Milano to some destinations.
