Nong Khai Visiting Nong Khai

I'm coming from Vientiane to Nong Khai and am debating whether to stop off for a few days to visit the town. Being the opposite side of the mekong from Vientiane would it be too similar an experience or is there much to do and see. I've seen images of the buddhist sculpture park which looks lovely.
Is it a beautiful town and how far and easy is it to get out into a surrounding village to explore. Basically is it worth stopping off here?

Don't bother.

You have a similar buddha park in Vientianne anyway...

This north east part of Thailand is basically the same as Laos, which was only carved out by Thailand for the French during the colonial period.

Nong Khai is just one of these ordinary Thai towns. Not bad, but nothing (very) special. It has (of course) some temples and a market, which is not as commercialised as others in Thailand.

We liked driving along the mekong river, visiting small Thai villages and remote temples.

happy travels
