Maryland I -95 Traffic Conditions and delays
Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 03:46 AM UTC
I travel many times a month between Washington and Philadelphia Airport on I-95
Usually going North in the late morning or early to mid afternoon. Is there any way to find out what the road conditions are or where construction delays are before I get on the road? And if I am on the road already, is there anyone I can contact to check on construction along I-95, so that I could possibly plan my route around that area? I don't know if there is a MD Transportation number that I could call. On my way to a 10:00 doctors appointment near the airport last Friday I crept along in traffic between Exit 85 and the Bridge over the Susquahanna River for well over an hour because they had 2 of the 3 lanes shut down to do some work on the bridge. I never did figure out what was being done and why 2 lanes had to be closed.I only saw 2 or 3 persons .I always allow at least an extra hour to get to where I need to be when driving that direction but I was still a bit late for my apointment. I have Sirius Radio traffic for Baltimore and Philly but they don't cover the area in between on I-95.

Maryland Dept. of Transportation, of course.

http://www.mdot.state.md.us/

Among other useful links there, start with the "Traffic and Travel" link.

For Delaware and Pennsylvania, consult their respective DOTs.

You can also check http://www.traffic.com/Philadelphia-Traffic/Philadelphia-Traffic-Map.html, which shows the area of I-95 that you're looking at.

Maryland Want to save money and time?

Every time I go north from Baltimore or Washington towards Philly on I-95, I always take Exit 77 north on Hiway 24, then US Hiway 1 north towards Philly. You can then take I-476 back to I-95, then continue north to PHL. I have NEVER been stuck on traffic on this detour, and always saved $7 on tolls. If there are no jams, staying on I-95 will save you time. If there ARE jam-ups, it's a no-brainer.

Be sure to fill up before you cross the MD-PA border -- gas becomes scarce and more expensive when you cross into Pennsylvania.

When the bridge over the Susquehanna is jammed, there is no reason to pay $4 to stay in a moving parking lot. Just go around it.
