| New York City | Broadway Play for Kids Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 03:10 AM UTC
I'll be in NYC with my 9 year old at the end of the month. Other than the Disney plays, does anyone have a recommendation for a Broadway play that would be appropriate for a 9 year old. I'm also kicking around the idea of taking him to see Blue Man Group.
Thanks! |

Curtains and Hairspray are two that come to mind. You can check out broadwaybox.com and read the reviews of people who have seen the plays (and get discount codes at the same time).

My 9-year old daughter loved Phantom of the Opera. She's hooked.

Have a look at Broadway's only theater dedicated to kids:

I actually vote for Blue Man Group for a 9 yr old boy. They're silly, messy, funny... all things 9 yr olds like! Try to get seats near the front so he can get splashed! :)
The Phantom is of course incredible but he may not understand/follow the story. Maybe consider the Disney musicals: Is Beauty and the Beast still on Broadway? He may enjoy this if he's seen the movie. Gaston is really funny and he has a great new beer-clinking song on stage. When I saw it there were a zillion kids in the audience. Maybe he'd like The Little Mermaid if he doesn't find to too girly. Everyone loves Sebastian the Crab. The Lion King might also be enjoyable for him as well if he likes the movie. If he hasn't seen the movie then the whole Scar/Mufasa scene might be a little too intense. Again, when I saw this there were a zillion kids in the audience. Hope this helps!

The original question was about "other than Disney plays".

Thanks! We are going to see Mary Poppins on Friday night and I think we'll go see Blue Man Group on Sunday night. We're staying with friends in the East Village so Astor Place is a close walk.

Wicked is a good play for the young ones.
