| Amsterdam | Driving Amsterdam to Brugge Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 02:53 AM UTC
On May 10 we plan to drive from Amsterdam to Brugge and to return to Schiphol Airport on May 13 for a flight the next day. On the trip to Brugge what would be the fastest, most direct routing? On the return to Schiphol Airport what would be the most scenic route? We'll have all day to spend on the return trip.

At Schiphol take the A4 / E19 Direction Den Haag/Rotterdam
At Den Haag knooppunt Ypenburg take the A13, E19 Direction Rotterdam At Rotterdam knooppunt Kleinpolderplein take A20, E19, E25 Direction Dordrecht At knooppunt Terbregseplein take the A16, E19 Direction Dordrecht A16 / E19 At knooppunt Klaverpolder take the A17, A59 Direction Roosendaal At knooppunt De Stok take the A58, E312 Direction Bergen op Zoom At knooppunt Zoomland take the A4, A58, E312 Direction Antwerpen At knooppunt Markiezaat 't Scheld take the de A4 Direction Antwerpen At knooppunt R2 take the R2 Direction Brugge/Gent/Haven 491-2000/Ring Antwerpen At knooppunt Beveren take the A11, E34, N49 richting Brugge/Haven Gent/Zelzate Alternative for the way back is togo to Terneeuzen and take the Westerschelde tunnel and from there go along the Dutch waterworks at the coast up to Rotterdam. Depending on the time left you can take the highways to Schiphol or do some more coastal roads (perhaps via Leiden, Lisse, Hillegom [tulip fields]). PJ

If you have the opportunity, I suggest getting a GPS as an option if you are renting a car. Worked very well for our trip to Bruges last November. I believe Hertz has GPS as an option, and they are located on Overtoom.
Have a great trip!

To describe that most scenic route a bit more:
Brugge to Terneuzen and then take the 6 km long tunnel to Goes. Turn your steering wheel west direction Middelburg and then choose the N57 all the way up to Hellevoetsluis/Brielle (where I live). This takes you along the famous Deltaworks: Veergatsedam, Oosterscheldedam, Brouwersdam, Haringvlietdam. See map and more information: http://www.deltawerken.com/Deltaworks/23.html Along the way I suggest you take a tiny detour to the small old town Veere. Even though I live nearby, I still go there at least once a year just to enjoy. And/or visit Neeltje Jans (http://www.neeltjejans.nl/index.php/en/home), where there's a visitors center about the Deltaworks. From Brielle (the end of the N57) you get on the A15 towards Rotterdam, then A4, A13 and A4 again to Schiphol. Off the beaten path: before you turn on the A15, choose Rozenburg instead of Rotterdam and visit the peninsula (Landtong at Rozenburg) to see the Maeslantkering Storm surge barrier. These are two 'arms', each the size of the Eifel tower, that can close off the whole Maas river in case of a spring flood. From Rozenburg, if you like, you could take the ferry to Maassluis and then get on the A20 direction Rotterdam and then A4 to Schiphol. Alternatively, if you haven't had enough scenic tours and time permitting, you might want to take the route from the ferry at Maassluis via Maasland and Schipluiden (a lovely drive along small dykes, the area called Westland) and then get on the A4 directly to Schiphol. I often take it in case of traffic jams which isn't a major punishment :-) Middelburg-Brielle is exactly 55 minute drive. If you like, see my Rozenburg and Veere page particularly. Excellent maps at www.viamichelin.com to orient yourself in advance.
