| Hawaii (State of) | Maui, Belize, St. Thomas??? Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 02:32 AM UTC
Hello all VTers,
We have the opportunity to go on a trip to one of three places: Maui, Belize, or St. Thomas. I am looking for opinions as to which of the three would be the best all around trip (ie. water activities, land activities) I would really appreciate anyones opinion on this matter. Thanks in advance to all that share. |

I'd say Belize. I've been to all three. Maui personifies "touristy," and St Thomas is not far behind. Some people like that, so if you want what Maui and St Thomas have (basically white people and gift shops), save $1000 and come to Florida. Same attractions, cleaner water.

What makes Maui special is that the island is dominated by a 30,000 foot dormant volcano Haleakala - 20,000 feet submerged under the ocean, 10,000 feet visible above land. This makes for varied reef formations in the ocean and climate zones from snow flurries at the summit to spring weather and lavender at 6,000 feet, grapes at 3,000, sugar cane and pineapple at tropical sea level. Activities include biking down the mountain, horseback riding, kayaking, scuba, snorkel, surfing, hiking through bamboo forests and past waterfalls, zipline, helicopter rides, etc. plus a glimpse into the Hawaiian culture through luaus, hula and "Ulalena," a cirque du soleil type show in Lahaina town. Maui No Ka Oi - Maui is the best!
