Caribbean and Central America Belize, Maui, St. Thomas???
Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 02:29 AM UTC
Hello all VTers,
We have the opportunity to go on a trip to one of three places: Maui, Belize, or St. Thomas. I am looking for opinions as to which of the three would be the best all around trip (ie. water activities, land activities)
I would really appreciate anyones opinion on this matter. Thanks in advance to all that share.

I've never been to Maui or St. Thomas ... but Belize has lot of activities! The second largest coral reef in the world, jungle, archeological Mayan ruins... and everything's nearby (it's a tiny country).

Just my opinion, but Maui and St. Thomas can be somewhat Americanized, which may or may not be attractive. Belize is definitely a central american country (although English speaking) and again may or may not be what you're looking for.
That aside, I think all have good watersports (diving, fishing, boating, etc - although if you want a true sandy beach, you have to choose carefully in Belize). For land activities, I'd suggest Belize, where you can explore archeological sites (including caves with ancient Mayan pottery and calcified skeletons), tube through caves and rivers, canoe, jungle trek, etc.
ALL THAT ASIDE, there are amenities. Maui and St. Thomas may have all the modern conveniences you'd expect in topnotch destinations. Belize may appear somewhat backwater, which I find charming and expected, but some may not be so forgiving.
Again, just my 2c

I have not visited Belize. I have been to Maui and St. Thomas. Given the choice I would return to Maui no questions. Now if you would like to change the St. Thomas to about 10 miles east to St. John I would take that in a heartbeat over Maui or StT.
