| Prague | Overnight Train from Prague to Frankfurt - is it safe? Posted: Wed April 30, 2008 04:23 PM UTC
Hello there!
I'm travelling alone on an overnight train from Prague to Frankfurt this coming May 6 (I'm a gal) via German train (DB Bahn). Is it generally safe to be travelling alone on an overnight train? Thanks! |

I reckon its no more risky than anywhere else. Just use your common sense.

Are you planning on sitting up all night or taking a couchette or sleeping compartment?
On many trains, if you have the sleeping compartment to yourself (not cheap, of course), you can lock yourself in. If you are in a couchette compartment, there will be as many as 4 to 6 people in there, but you can normally ask for an all-female compartment (at least you can in Italy, I assume you can with the Bahn). And the people who take couchettes are no more interested in trouble than you are. Taking just a seat all night is indeed generally safe (we had a lot of 19 year old students do it); however, if you are on a train without reservations, you would normally walk up and down the aisles until you found another compartment with some older women, preferably ones that look like they could (and would) take on a regiment of randy soldiers ;-) The other VTers are right that this is generally not a problem, but you can certainly minimize your chances even more by your impromptu choice of compartment mates... Thank you Bill!
I'm taking a seat with reservation and it looks like I should be fine then. Your response helped lessen my worry. Thanks!
