Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Sydney World Youth Day 2008
Posted: Wed April 30, 2008 07:42 AM UTC
Hi everyone,
is anybody going to the Holy Father`s mass on Sunday at the WYD in Sydney. Would like to know how to go there (bus route number, train etc.?) I am staying at Penrith for a traineeship and would like to get information/tips about visiting the WYD ( i.e. is it necessary to registrate for the mass, how early should one be there in order to get a good place ...)
Thanks for dealing with my question

Once you get into the city from Penrith (I assume you will come in by train) if you have left yourself plenty of time, you will find that there will be crowds of people walking to Randwick for the Mass. I was in Sydney when Pope Paul VI said Mass at Randwick back in the late sixties or early seventies and we found it easiest just to follow the crowd and walk. It was an extremely happy atmosphere and afterwards we were glad we didn't try to go by public transport.

I'm sure that there will be special buses going to Randwick that day and you will see them very easily when you get off the train. Coming from Penrith, you would probably get off the train at Central and if you can't find a bus to Randwick just follow the crowd because that's where they will all be going. It's not a very short walk mind you, it will probably take you the best part of an hour or so, but you will enjoy it, I can promise you that. Have a wonderful time!

I also read at the Sydney news paper that the Pope will stay at the St. Mary's Cathedal during his visit and one of the place he will hold a big youth mass at Sydney's Olympic park. Perhaps someone from Sydney can confirm the latest development come this July's pope visit and the Pope's schedule and itenaries round Sydney. Thanks

Dennis

http://www.cityrail.info/timetable/index.jsp

Timetables can be found there. You want the 'Blue Mountains' line that travels 'Lithgow to Central'. It's a 50min train ride.

It's only a 15min walk up from Central Station to Hyde Park, and you'll probably see the Pope and all others hanging out there having a chat!

Have fun!
