| London | London at night. easybus stops Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 08:43 PM UTC
hi
I'm from Portugal and I'm traveling with some friends next tuesday to london. We caught a low cost flight for 45 euros with bus to city center. We will arrive the city center wednesday at 2 a. m. and we will leave london in the same day at 18:30 p. m. I'm writing this message in order to get some help on what to do at night in london. Does anyone knows any bar or disco not very expensive near the easybus bus stops (Baker Street or Buckingham Palace Road) where we can spend the night? Or anything else to do while waiting for daylight? The subway station is open at night? I'm thinking if we could stay there in a bench or something. Thanks. |

The Tube (subway) does not run all night and stations will probably be closed by the time you arrive. Railway stations are policed throughout the night and you will most likely be moved on if you try to sleep there. London has a pretty large homeless population, so 'sleeping rough' in obvious places is not encouraged.
I don't know of any specific all-night discos/bars, but there are some which stay open late (not sure about Tuesday nights though). There are also some pubs which open very early (from 3/4am in some cases) around Smithfield market. Hopefully other VT-ers can provide more specific info.

Lots of bars have a 24 hour licence, but most choose not to use it (either the staff won't work that late or there's too much trouble when people drink for that long.) Some places will open late, maybe until 4am, but many of these charge an entrance fee (around £10 to get in then drinks are pricey) Oxford Street area may have something to offer, but just how late they open I'm not sure.
There is a knack to staying occupied until the rest of the world wakes up though...keep moving...that will keep you warm and occupied. Most of central London is quite walkable, so you might want to see some of the sights at night. If you aren't much of a walker, there's always the nightbuses, which are always full of interesting and colourful characters. You could head for Trafalgar Square at the bottom of the Mall (that's where you'll find nightbuses and a 24 hour Tesco Express (grocery store). If you walk south down Whitehall you'll see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament which look great by night. A walk east along the Thames will show lots of amazing night time sights...the London Eye, St Pauls, The Monument, Tower Bridge. Good luck finding something...

Bar Italia in Soho is 24hour, there are not many in London, especially on wednesday. The weather is very rainy at the moment, you need to be indoors. The night buses are good. A one day bus pass from an automatic machine is £3.50. It is a good idea to learn how they work. You could travel between these 24hour places.
