Dublin Looking for a good base
Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 08:26 PM UTC
I'm planning a trip to Ireland and would like to find a nice base somewhere near Dublin. I would ike someplace with an old feel with a good deal of preserved buildings. Someone suggested Swords do you think that this meets my needs? also can anyone give me their impression of Glennshandan Lodge in swords. Thank you

With all due respect to the citizens of Swords, it's a suburban town, near the airport, with lots of new buildings and heavy traffic to get into the city. The villages of Malahide or Howth are both pretty and historic and in scenic locations on the coast with good transport links to the city via the DART (train). Don't know Glennshandan Lodge but I'm sure you could Google it.

Maynooth in county Kildare is a lovely little town not far out of Dublin. I passed through there a couple of years back and thought it was beautiful. It is most famous for the Catholic University which is situated beside the Royal Canal. You can go for Canal walks and of course explore the university which is a fountain of history. There are also good little pubs and all the usual facilities. I believe there are plenty of B&B's, Hotels etc. available as well. Try this website:

May I suggest Dun Laoghaire? A nice little town on the East coast, very easy to get to city centre. Dun Laoghaire is beautiful and still has a lot of the old stuff intact.

Hi There:
I am headed to Dublin this Friday evening, and will be staying in Swords in a condo development called "Heyward Mews" Our unit is three bedrooms, but I'm not sure if they also have smaller units available. You can book this location for between $1000 - $1500 for one week, which is an excellent rate compared to what else I was able to find in the Dublin area. It looks from the photos to be more modern in style than what you are probably looking for, however, as I mentioned, and you have probably found, the hotels in Dublin can be horribly expensive. Just thought I'd pass this on...if you are interested, I would be happy to give you some feedback upon our return around the third week of the month. We are also booked for our last night there in Fitzpatrick Castle, which again, from the photos, looks really nice, but I can't give you any details other than it is an actual castle. If I recall correctly, the room rate was about $225 or so per night for two people.

Hope this is of some help to you!
