| Slovakia | Rail travel in Eastern Europe Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 05:36 PM UTC
We are wanting to travel through Eastern Europe for 2 weeks in June. Our inital travel plan is Prague- Krakow - Eastern Slovakia (eg Tatra mountains, Levoca) - Eger (Hungary) - Budapest. Is this possible via rail, or would it be better to go via bus through Eastern Slovakia? Can anyone suggest the cheapest and easiest way for 3 adults to travel this route, or suggest a better route to get a taste of these countries?

I will answer in a bit strange way (you don't mind it do you?).
First about taste of these countries. I see that you are a bit advanced than average ( Levoca indicates it for me). There is a lot another Levoca(s) on your way. Once I 'tasted' Brussel,Aachen,Koln, Dresden-within two days by train (with stops)-nothing to be proud (hahaha). An another approach. I spent 10 days between Krakow and Praha last summer by car.I need at least another 10 days to explore it.If you don't hike (or alternatively if you only search for places for hiking) 10 days is enough for 'taste' between Krakow and Praha in my opinion. Praha for tourist is not about much Czechia in my opinion. It's more about tourist business. Krakow also becomes like that (but not yet). Praha-Krakow- by train is fine. Krakow-Tatry-Levoca should take 5-7 days without hiking in my opinion.Hiking- some people stay only in Tatry for two weeks (and there is much more beside Tatry to explore in 'hiking' on the way). If you want to hike in the mountains in places between. Mind you that Eastern Slovakia is much more than only Levoca. One of my a bit strange but safe (with common sense experience) there was a kind of adventure in Roma/Gypsy village, as my bike wheel was broken, and dozen of childrens tried to help me. I always (try to) respect other people (which is not common towards Gypsies in Europe). You can also travel in Slovakia and don't see any Gypsy/Roma on your way. This part I would travel mainly by bus (at least in Poland trains in mountains areas are very slow). Levoca- Eger- It can take 3-7 days (or much more with hiking). It depends which route.Probably by bus. I know that this is a bit extreme point of view.
