| Buenos Aires | Looking for a Hotel Recommendation Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 04:21 PM UTC
Hi,
I've done a bit of research online including reading a lot of the old threads in this forum and it's all been very useful but I don't think that I've yet found what I'm looking for (if it exists). My girlfriend and I will be spending a week in Buenos Aires in August and I'm looking for hotel recommendations or at least recommendations for where in the city we should be looking. We'd rather be away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas, though not so far that we can't be there in 15 or 20 minutes by cab. We also prefer colonial architecture and value 'character' over fancy amenities (though obviously cleanliness and safety are both important). While it would be great to save a few bucks by getting off the beaten track, that's not our primary concern so we'd love suggestions for even pricier hotels which you think we might like. One last note: my Spanish is functional and my girlfriend is a native Spanish speaker so language isn't an issue for us. Thanks. |

I will suggest a range of hotels and you can compare and contrast. I will begin with a nice little, fairly cheap hotel in Palermo SoHo Hotel Costa Rica.
http://www.hotelcostarica.com.ar/eng/ Next Che Lulu a bit funkier and cheaper also in Palermo SoHo http://www.chelulu.com/ A bit further up the food chain is Home Hotel http://www.homebuenosaires.com/home/ a very nice and more upscale trendy place to stay also in Palermo SoHo. Going further upscale SoHo All Suites http://www.sohoallsuites.com/ also in Palermo SoHo. And then my personal favorite but very hard to book is the BoBo Hotel http://www.bobohotel.com/ I began with hotels in Palermo SoHo since I assume you and your girlfriend are on the younger side and the better boutiques, clubs, bars and restaurants are located there. The next area I would suggest would be the Recoleta which is one of the nicer barriors in the city and well within your 15 minute taxi ride to Palermo SoHo and Hollywood. I will begin with a rather basic one, but in a good location. The Juncal Palace, http://www.juncalpalacehotel.com.ar/index.htm next would be the Art Hotel, very nice and good service http://www.arthotel.com.ar/ Next the Apart Recoleta http://www.apartrecoleta.com.ar/index_ingles.htm Next would be a studio apartment at the Concord Callao which you can rent through Temporary Apartments http://www.temporaryapartments.com.ar/ The areas I would suggest avoiding would be the Micro Center (downtown) very congested in the daytime and pretty dead at night. Tons of tourists along Calle Florida as well. Also San Telmo which is very much worth visiting but would put you at the opposite end of the city from Palermo SoHo, and don't think it offers nearly as much to see and do as would the Recoleta or SoHo. As for pricer hotels, they are certainly available....but rather depends on what you consider pricey. For about $500 USD a night you can stay at the Faena Hotel and Universe http://www.faenahotelanduniverse.com/ Hope this helps and if you have any additional questions feel free to get in touch. suerte SAM

Wow, thanks a lot Porteno, that reply was very, very helpful. Actually, the very first link - hotel costa rica looks pretty good. I should have mentioned are ages; I'm mid 30s and my girlfriend is mid 20s. That said, neither of us are big drinkers and don't care too much about the night life stuff. Does that argue for SoHo over Recoleta?
A general follow up question: when is busy tourist season in Buenas Aires? Or is it generally steady all year round. Thanks again. -rs1971

It varies, December, January and February would be the high season. For me the best time of year here is late October November and March/April. Weather is not as hot and humid as the summer months can be. Golly Palermo SoHo is more trendy with the largest and best selection of restaurants, and La Recoleta is a bit of Paris.

I've been in Buenos Aires a couple of times and I still keep on wanting to come back. A Hotel can be quite nice, but it's nothing compared to the feeling of being in a Hostel. Both times I was in a Hostel called Garden House, located in San Telmo and I loved it! The staff rocks and they were really helpful when I asked for help and places to go out. Once you go there, you never want to leave. It's located in a very quiet place but you can easily get to the downtown area in just minutes, because they have a subway nearby.
