| Barcelona | La Verneda area - what's your impression? Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 02:48 PM UTC
Hello VTers in Barcelona!
My boyfriend and I are recent college graduates and will be staying in the La Verneda are in Barcelona for a month or so. I was there for a few weeks two summer ago. I know that it is a working-class neighborhood, a few bars and delis nearby, close metro stop, and so on. I'll be there in just a few weeks, but I'm anxious to know what Barcelona natives know of this area. What is there to do at night? Are there good restaurants you like to go to around there? Something you might recommend I go to, or avoid? Thank you! |

As you wrote, this is a working-class area. In fact I work very near that area.
There is nothing to do at night or good restaurants, but as you know, it is close to metro stations, has several bus lines and there is a new tram line running nearby, so for you to stay there it is OK.

I was raised in La Verneda. This neighborhood has gone through a big transformation, since it was created as a "dorm city" in the 60's. I even remember some hard times 20-25 years ago, when there was serious tension with ilegal gipsy settlements that resulted in riots.
As said above, nowadays La Verneda is just a working-class neighborhood, safe, modern and well connected to the city centre, but that's all. Don't expect trendy boutiques, lively restaurants or a frantic club life. One advantage might be that rents are a bit (but just a bit) lower than in other central areas.

I love this forum. The world just gets smaller and smaller.
Thanks very much for your replies. The idea of slightly cheaper rent is very attractive, especially since we'll want to stay close to the metro.

It is not beautyful, but safe. For everything special you'll have to go to the city centre. As you come from the US, you won't find the distances far. But I heard about someone living there and highly reccomending a waggon stand selling big and cheap portions of patatas bravas!

excellent! There is also a Galician bar nearby, I'll have to learn how to eat many forms of octopus!
