Pennsylvania PHILA TO PITTSBURGH ON AMTRAK
Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 10:43 AM UTC
I'm seeking information about the train ride from Phila. to Pittsburgh. How long is the ride, cost, and anything else of interest. I should fly but this sounded easy and relaxing if not too long a journey. I don't want to drive but of course could fly.

Amtrak is relaxing, but not the quickest trip. The ride between Philadelphia and Pittsburg is about a 7 hour journey and usually cost about $90 round trip. You can check out the amtrak website at www.amtrak.com. I have taken a car between the cities and there is some pretty scenery as there are rolling hills in Pennsylvania espcially when you get near the Pittsburg area.

I took a morning train from Philadelphia to Pittsburg. It had old cars,a snack bar which was lacking in decent snacks and was late by about an hour getting to Pittsburg, and I have nothing against school children, but this train was packed with school kids going to other towns for games, or just an outing with their class on the train, it was not a very peaceful ride. I won't be taking it again.

Thanks... maybe I will fly. The cost turns out to be only about $38 (I'm old), so that's cheap (especially as I live now in the UK). It does seem a long trip, and I've driven it quite a few times as I grew up in Phila.

Length of trip and costs are covered in detail at the Amtrak site. As for "anything else of interest," that's a function of time of day, time of year, and what you'll see out the window. Out the window, you'll get a nice slice of America from the Coastal Plain from one of America's oldest and largest cities thru the Appalachians to the Allegheny Mts. ending at a gateway to the Midwest and the Great Lakes region.

Consult Pennsylvania's official tourism site for more info.
