In my opinion Torcello (with the oldest church, first settlement in the laggon.. a quick visit) and Burano with its colourful hoses. Murano on the way back only if you have spare time..

as I remember from a visit several years ago, the best part of going to Murano is indeed the going to, that is I really enjoyed the boat ride (a nice and sunny early may day), not so much the island itself.

For me: by far the most interesting (and less touristy) is Burano with its colourful houses and small canals.

yes, burano is worth a visit. there are lots of nice places to eat there also. Not so many on murano which is full of tourist shops selling glass, but we did find a nice cichetti bar there. Lido is also woth a vist, for the vies of san marco as you come and go, and for the beach too. None of these places is that far, but the routes arent straighforward and the services to torcello etc run sometimes once an hour, so you cant just arrive at the dock and expect to go.

Murano, where they sell the glass, is a boring place. They escort you into the glass furnace workshop; they do not address the group at all; then they shepherd you into the retail shop, where they wait for you to buy something. They didnt even show an "industrial film." No courtesy, no feeling of personal touch; we were ignored.

if you wish more information on any of the small islands and can not find any by doing a destinnation search using t.he name of the island. try using a keyword search often people put tips about small towns and villages in the off the beaten track tips of a large town nearby.
