Hello John. The train is probably the most pleasant way to get from Nice to Aix. Here's a web site for information. http://www.sncf.co.uk/
For accomodations type Nice into the VT Search Window above and check Hotels and Accomodations Tips by VT members. There will be reviews, photos and links to the hotel web sites. BTW, it can get very hot and crowded in August so you may want to check on air conditioning at your hotel. Enjoy your trip.

The train is a good option between Nice & Aix. I would recommend staying the night. The travel time from Nice to the Aix TGV station is 2.5 hours direct, but then you'll still need to catch a bus into the city center (another 30 minutes or so). The travel time to the Aix Centre station is 3.5 hours or longer and requires a change. I'm pretty sure that it's a shorter walk from the TGV bus stop to the main tourist area than it is from the Aix Centre station.
I stayed at Hotel de France in Aix last year. I generally stay in budget hotels and found it a bit worn, but charming & nice enough (I think it was about €60 for a single). It's location, however, is tremendous.
