| Pompeii | Rail / bus travel from Naples to Pompeii Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 06:19 PM UTC
Hi All,
We're docking for a day in Naples and are desperate to visit Pompeii. I know we can only get a taste of Pompeii in a few hours, but would love to go. Tour rates from the ship are stupid prices - is is feasable to get reliable, reasonable public train / bus services to Pompeii from Naples and back again. If so how much does it cost and how often do they run. Any other tips would be greatfully received. Thanks in advance |

This has been discussed several times in the last few weeks, but I can't remember whether it was in the Pompeii, Naples or another forum. Yes, it is feasible, but depends on how much time you've got. I'll have a hunt through the forums, and see if I can find you the info - several people have been to Pompeii recently, and have all the answers at their fingertips.

It was the Naples forum. Have a look at this thread.

Get yourself to Napoli Centrale station.
Circumvesuviana train from there (takes about 30 minutes). Trains are frequent and cheap (commutertrains, so have plastic seats/more like subway carriages)Stops almost directly opposite the entrance to Pompeii. No probs. Timetables here (Linea Napoli-Sorrento): http://www.vesuviana.it/Reteeorari/Ferrovia/Orario Try to get there as early as you can: it's entirely wonderful before the tour groups arrive. Take some water (though there is a cafe on site). My Pompeii pages have info. If you have time, get off the Circumvesuviana at Herculaneum as well (I have pages): smaller but equally wonderful (and maybe Villa Poppea as well, if there's time...yes, I have pages ! :-) ). Opening times etc here: http://www2.pompeiisites.org/database/pompei/pompe (click on the site name). Enjoy....it's an unmissable experience, imo.

Can't remember fares, but we are talking 5-6 euros max.
Suggest you get a taxi to (and maybe from) Napoli Centrale station, to save time.

You could walk from your docking point but it would be quicker/easier for you to take a taxi to Centrale. Then take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi station. Trains are cheap and frequent. The station is just a few minutes walk from the entrance to Pompeii. At Centrale, as you enter through the main entrance, bear to your right and just follow the signs to Cicumvesuviana - you will have to buy a ticket before you go through the turnstyles. And don't forget to validate your ticket at the start of each journey. If you have time, using the same train, on the return journey stop off at Ercolano to visit Herculaneum - but you will probably not have time. Or take the train to Torre Annunciata to visit Villa Oplontis. As you are desperate to visit Pompeii, then I would do just that. Have a look at my Pompeii, Herculaneum pages. At Pompeii you can rent an audio guide, which I recommend you do, and in the leaflet for the site you will find suggested tours lasting 2, 4 or 6 hours, which might be a good way to go. Don't forget to take water with you.
