What is the shortest rout to reach Rameswaram by air ? Chennai or Coimbatore.

From Rameswaram I want to go to Madurai. I have already booked Air tickets from Mumai to Chennai. Please guide me so that I can change my plan or tickets accordingly.

The closest airport is Madurai. From there about 5 hours by bus/car...

I've driven from Madurai to Rameswaram. By Indian standards, it's quite a pleasant road.

Chennai is almost north of Rameswaram while Madurai+Coimbotre is to the north-west. Madurai will be roughly mid-point of Rameswaram and Coimbotre. Chennai will be far off from rameswaran compared to both Maduari & Coimbotre.Since you have booked the Mumbai-Chennai flight, go ahead. Plenty of public transport avaialble from Chennai to Rameswaram.

Madurai is the closest airport. You will get plenty of buses and pvt taxis to RAmeswaram from Madurai. From Mumbai to Madurai there is no direct flt and you will have to go via Chennai in any case. For all India bus bookings try redbus.in It will be a long bus journey from Chennai, maybe you can take the train to the nearest point.

It would be better if you reach Madurai.After arriving in Chennai, you may take a direct flight to Madurai and then take the road either by bus or by car to Rameshwaram. You may also take a direct train from Chennai (that leaves in the evening around 530pm and arrives at 5:30am next day in Rameshwram).There are lots of buses from Madurai to Rameshwarm nad takes around 4hrs with a few stops. If you take a car, you may take about 3 hrs.

From Rameshwram to Madurai,there are trains (suggest you to experience by train that goes on the sea bridge!)and takes 4hrs.Ofcourse you have lots buses at frequent intervals.
