Yogyakarta Special Region Transport from Yogyakarta to Bali
Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 05:40 AM UTC
Hello friends Im travelling to Bali from Thailand but decided to book my flight into Yogya instead of Bali this time so I could finally see a bit of java and especially borobadur.
Can you tell me anything about the bus to bali or train to extreme end of java near bali.Price and time on the road etc..
Also price for cheap flights if there is no bus.
I fear to go on a train in java are these fears jusified?
Is there cheap accomodation at borobodur?
Thanks in advance!

Bus schedule from Yogya to Bali is in the afternoon cost less than Rp 250,000 leave every day. Do not take train, since too complicated journey except you like adventure. There is no direct train to Bali from Yogya.
for cheap flight, try http://www.mandalaair.com/

Hi!

There are buses that will take you from Yogya to Denpasar, but I am sorry I cannot give you particulars about them.

The train schedules you can find on: http://www.infoka.kereta-api.com/
At the bottom of the home page you can choose for English language, although some details remain in Indonesian.
You would have to take one train from Yogya to Surabaya Gubeng in 5 to 6 hours. There are many of them ranging in price from less than Rp 100,000 to over Rp 200,000 depending on the class and date.
Then you would have to take another train from Surabaya Gubeng to Banyuwangi, travel time 6 to 7 hours. The Mutiara Timur class would cost you from Rp 40,000 to Rp 70,000.
Then you would still have to take a bus from Banyuwangi to Denpasar. There is no reason to be afraid going by train, but a bus straight from Yogya to Denpasar will be cheaper and less hassle arranging your next traject. If you choose a train with business or executive class, you have a guaranteed seat and pedlars are not allowed on the train. Economy class is very cheap but without guaranteed seat; no special reason te be afraid, one should keep an eye on ones luggage anywhere!

Companies with flights from Yogya to Denpasar are:
Garuda: http://www.garuda-indonesia.com/index.php. One way prices start at about Rp 300,000 for last minute bookings, to over Rp 600,000 for booking well in advance.
Mandala: http://www.mandalaair.com/. They publish a cheap one way fare of only Rp 100,000. The normal fare is Rp 555,000.
Lion Air: http://www.lionair.co.id/main.asp. Rather high fare of Rp 684,000 net.

There is the Manohara Hotel located in the Borobudur Park, which is very convenient if you want to see the sunrise while on top of the Borobudur. They publish a price of Rp 400,000 for a double on their website: http://www.yogyes.com/en/yogyakarta-hotel/budget/manohara/.
I do not know whether there might be cheaper accommondation close to the Borobudur Park, I rather doubt it.

Have a nice trip,
Theo

Since others have already elaborated on all means of transport for Jogja-Bali transportation, there is no point in repeating it. But I would just like to add that the bus journey from Jogja to Denpasar (Bali)is a long one and can take upto 16-18 hrs. You have a choice of buses available-from cheap to luxury airconditioned bus options. Go for the luxury (A/C bus) option. The bus will go from Jogja to the port city of Nganjuk/Ketapang near Surabaya in eastern Java and then the bus will be loaded onto a ferry which will crossover to Gilimanuk port city of Bali (this happens in the night time). The total one way cost of the luxury bus from Jogja to Denpasar was IDR 120,000 in May 2007.
Once your bus sets off in bali, the drive is excellant (early morning hours) and within an hour or so, you will be in Denpasar. Most of the Indonesians will travel by this route to Bali.
