Hey guys,

Will be heading down first week of May. Was wondering how is the current weather now. I had a friend come back from Phuket recently , and he said it has been raining. Has the raining season started already? If yes , how often does it rain? ( everyday?) and also , hows the sea conditions?


I hope we get good weather when we go. Don't want to be stuck in the hotel all day long.

I cant predict the weather for this May. Apparently from reading other recent posts it seems the rainy season has started a bit earlier this year. All I can do is tell you what it was like in Phuket around the same time last year. First few days of May "beautiful" warm to hot days. From around the 8th one or two heavy showers most days but not everyday, sometimes in the morning or late afternoon lasting around 30 - 45 minutes then clearing. Evenings nice. Seas quite choppy at times on the Western side of the island. Its just a nuisance really but won't spoil your holiday too much.

I will be going to Patong 3rd week of May...I would go online and search out Thailand weather forecast,and in particular Phuket...I have done this previously,but can't remember which site I went to...??..Try Saltwaterdreaming.com....They usually forecast about 5-7 days ahead,but remember this is a wide range forecast and it's not 100%....I guess if you're commited to going,then you have to put up with what mother nature throws at you...rain,hail or shine...!!!...May is the beginning of the monsoon season meaning higher waves on the west coast...Beware of rips and strange currents when swimming at the beaches even when the waves are small...Let's wish together for fabulous weather in May...and what's a tropical rainstorm between drinks...!!??...

The rainy season has already started, although in between the rain showers very hot sunny days. Can be slightly overcast on some days.

Yes, it has started to rain, but certainly not all day, nor every day. We had a purely awful day last Thursday with lots of wind, thunder, lightning and torrential rain, and even sea spouts (I saw two--one quite near--as the boat I was on was coming back to port). But that weather has passed, and what is left is some cloud cover with occasional rain showers.

Note several things with this forecast--
You can see the predicted chance of rainfall in the percentages at the bottom of each day's section of the chart. These figures, 60% for the most part, indicate that the rainy season is definitely here. You can also see how much rain has fallen over a particular period. The page as I see it now shows ZERO rain for the past three hours and 8mm over a 24-hour period from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m. at the airport and a bit less in Phuket City.

Amusingly, it tells me that the wind is now "clam" which is obviously a typo, but still makes me smile ;-) and that the temperature yesterday was over 34 C at the airport but a whole degree cooler in town. It's 30 C right now, at about 6 p.m.

I always look forward to clam winds whenever I return to Phuket...Clam winds usually means clam surf...So,I am excited...!!!
