| Casablanca | first time to Morocco(Marrakech)...clothing and tattoos Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 12:14 AM UTC
i'll be in marrakech from may 8-12 for a wedding, ive never been out of the u.s. before and im wondering what people;s views on tattoos are? my entire left arm is covered with tattoos, is that offensive to people in morocco and/or should i keep them covered out in public?? also, im assuming it will be hot, are sneakers/shorts/t-shirts okay to wear?
thanks for your help! |

Tatoos are generally fine unless they are the "sailor" type, i.e. naked women, in that case I'd keep them covered up.
unfortunately you will find more and more westerners bringing their clothing traditions along so for men shorts have become acceptable (do not go for the short 80's football shorts! Stick with bermudas)This rule does NOT apply to women who should not be wearing shorts or short skirts for that matter. Sneakers and T-shirts are fine. Women should wear t-shirts that cover your shoulders. Nice to see that you asked.

A lot of Moroccans associate tattoos with a bad lifestyle ( previous prison sentences, negative behaviour, drugs, etc...)
Little tattoos of flowers, names, etc, are okay but something like an arm fully covered with tattoos might not be the best thing to show while in Morocco, especially in mid-size and small towns and villages.
