| Pisa | Cycling by the Arno Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 08:02 PM UTC
We have boooked a holiday in Pisa and will be staying in Claudia Ferri B&B. Has anyone been there and can give me an idea of the surroundings? Also would it be difficult to do some cycling in Pisa say, by the Arno? are there Cycling Paths?

The B&B you booked is by the Arno river right in the heart of the city center, a perfect location to explore the city with all in-town destinations within walking distance.
On general basis there are no cycling paths to wander the surrounding areas, but cycling is an enjoyable experience providing you do it carefully. You can get to the coast in 10 Km cycling aside the Arno River or up in the hills in about the same distance. Enjoy your vacation! Giuseppe

I don't recall designated cycling paths, but do recall many cyclists (it's a college town; many bikers/hikers/non-motorized denizens). They maneuver through traffic the same as drivers and pedestrians. Down near the river the terrain is fairly level. Major thoroughfares are wide, by European standards, but most side streets are cramped and narrow (again, by European standards). Heading toward the Leaning Tower and environs, it's elevated, but easily handled by a seasoned cyclist. My Travel Page has a tip about trekking on foot to the Tower and back from the train station on foot w/luggage in tow. So if I could do it, you can, too, and cycle Pisa enjoyably if you keep your wits about you.
