Isle of Skye Travel to Isle of Skye on the late May long weekend
Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 07:43 PM UTC
Hi everyone,

Can somebody help me as I'm planning to travel to Isle of Skye at the end of May long weekend (24th - 26th May). It's going to be 3 day solid travel for 4 people and I'm currently living in London.

My plan is to take a flight from London to Inverness (guess that's the nearest airport to Isle of Skye?), then hire a car or take local transports to Isle of Skye. My schedule route will be by-pass A87 via Skye Bridge, then heading to Portree (maybe 1st night staying at Portree). The next destination will be travel via A87 up further north to Uig, as I want to visit "Skye Museum of Island Life" via A855, then visit Staffin Bay and Kilt Rock Waterfall in heading back down to Portree. Not sure where should I stay for the 2nd night, any suggestions?

Is it expensive to hire a cor for 3 days and what about the accomodations in Isle of Skye? Is there going to be enoughtime for me to do this route in 3 days time.

Please advise and thanks so much for your help.

Cheers,
Viv

I assumed you've already booked your flight? If not, do it now: prices will just get higher........

Hiring a car isn't cheap (I suggest you book online, as soon as possible, as it's a holiday weekend), and neither is petrol. However, it will be much more realistic than relying on public transport, especially on a holiday weekend.

http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp?database=B

will give you route info and times etc (though allow more time, to allow for tractors/weather etc). It takes a couple of hours from Inverness to Skye bridge. You should be able to see enough in 3 days, but be aware of opening times for the museum (1700, closed Sundays) and allow extra time for driving back to Inverness on a bank holiday.

If you decide against a car, the journeyplanner on:

might help. But Ithink this will be more problematic.

Best to book your accommodation in advance, as it's a holiday weekend. Look here:

for starters.

You might do better to fly into Glasgow, pick up a car there and then drive up to Skye. By the time you get to Uig from Portree, you might want to consider staying there for the night. I'd stay the first night in Prtree, the 2nd night in uig and the last night in Portree again. However, if you haven't already booked something, then see to it right away. Or you could stay the first night in Fort William, the second night in Uig, and the third night in Portree. It is much longer than you might think to drive from Portree to Uig. If you fly into Glasgow there is a Scottish Citylink Coach that goes from Glasgow to Uig but other than that, I am not au fait with local transport.

Thank you so much leics for the suggestions, the information was very handy. Is it save to travel on my own as my friend comment the bank holiday weekend is quiet expensive and most of the accomodations and flights are quiet booked out. I'm thinking of going during weekday. Which month is the best time to visit Isle of Skye.
Thanks again.

Entirely safe. Just use the common sense you would use anywhere else.

As for what month....well, summer has the better weather of course. Supposedly......nothing is predictable with UK weather! Skye is a popular destination, so July and August (school holidays) will be busiest. Maybe June, or very early July? Book your flights now if you plan to travel then: the earlier you book the cheaper the fares will be.
