| Interlaken | Weather and wildlife in late May? Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 06:42 PM UTC
Hello,
We are excited about our upcoming trip exploring the Berner Oberland region. Using Interlaken as our base, we will be exploring and hiking in the nearby areas, including Lauterbrunnen, Murren, and of course the Schilthorn and Jungfrau. Would anybody who lives, or has traveled to this area during this time of year be able to provide any insight as to the weather we should expect? Of course, we know it will vary depending on the elevation, but any suggestions for how to pack would be helpful. Also, any idea of what kinds of animals and vegetation we could expect to see? Thank you! |

Jen, We were in Interlaken, Lauterbrunen and Murren last year at the end of May. We have been there at that time before. Last year it SNOWED one day and we saw lots of rain. The good side of that was the day we had lunch at Murren when the sun come out it was fantastic with all the fresh snow on the mountains. You need layers that can handle cool temps (45 deg or so) and a waterproof outer layer. We've had great weather at that time of year also but you will probably not need shorts! We're going to be there in August and we just can't stay away. It's our favorite place on earth! Can't help much with wildlife - we always ride out to the Thun to visit the ducks talking to all the cows that we pass - that's the best that I can do. If you have any practical questions about Interlaken let me know. The Harder Kulm funicular offers a great view of town and it's free if you have a rail pass. They also have good deserts.

Hi - I agree with layers. We were there about the same time last May. We had some dreary days at the lower altitudes but it wasn't unbearably cold. We had low/no visibility on top of Schilthorn and Jungfrau, where it was windy and freezing, but had a blast anyway. Hope you have better visibility! Happy Travels.

Hi,
I'm going to the same area in Mid-June. Would I be safe to assume that the weather may be a tiny bit warmer, but still expect the unpredictability? Thanks in advance!
