New York City Hotel 309 on 14th street

Has anyone stayed at this hotel? How is it? Great location and great price. We don't expect fancy or boutique, just clean and safe.

I'm sure it's safe, but from the tripadvisor reviews, not someplace I'd choose to stay:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d612259-Reviews-Hotel_309-New_York_City_New_York.html

I'm cynical about reviews, and always think the very best and very worst are written by hotel owners and their competitors. Still, when even the "good" review says "sure there are cockroaches..." something is very wrong.

What are your dates and what is your budget?

We are going in May and $200 per night. I have not found the trip advisor reviews reliable at all. That is why I am here on virtual tourist. I get much more reasoned advice here.

Have you stayed at this hotel before?

Thankfully, I live here! While I don't trust every review, I've had good luck with tripadvisor's reviews. Just disregard the best and worst, the truth is there in the middle. I also tend to disregard reviewers who are looking for 5* hotels at 2* prices. Unfortunately, $200 is way below even budget rates these days. Have you considered priceline? If you only need one bed, it's a great option. But don't bid blindly. Read up on strategies for NYC bidding. The most useful sites are biddingfortravel.com and betterbidding.com.

There seem to be some nice B&Bs in Harlem, on the subway line, at about US$100. Anybody have any info on one of these as an alternative?
