New Orleans Hello New Orleans and every body!!!
Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 01:32 AM UTC
I´m visiting New Orleans for the wine and food festival taking place at the end of May (actualy, I will write about it for my travel section...newspaper) and I wonder if you can help me find the best mufaletta (italian sandwich I believe)...I have heard about the Napoleon House, but some one else told me about an old grocery store in the French Quarter....do you know?

Also, I´d appreciate any input about interesting places for my travel section...I´d like to give a hand to N.O. after all this disaster...actually, i have written a few stories to bring visitors....hugs!!!

Asking a New Orleanean where the best muffaletta is quite possibly worse than asking a New Yorker where the best pie is. However, I've had PLENTY of muffalettas in my time and must say that the best muffaletta in New Orleans is at the Central Grocery Store near the French Market. It's located on 23 Decatur Street on the left hand side as you walk away from Canal Street.

I believe this is the one to which you were referring.

Yes! the Central Grocery Store. That´s the place I was refering. I heard they have the best muffaletta. Actually, I didn´t know such an Italian based sandwich could be so popular in New Orleans. Thnak you for the tip and address...you´re an asset here.

I will also be at the NOFWE, hoping to see my favorite restaurants represented!

Central Grocery is the most popular choice.

The reason Italian food is so popular in New Orleans is because there is a very large Italian (Sicilian) population within the city and surrounding areas. You might also check out Salvatore's in Metarie or Eleven79 (which is a personal favorite of mine) which is just on the edge of uptown.

I most certainly will. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be the for the food and wine festival; I'm going to Jazz Fest this weekend. BTW, what kinds of things would you consider to be "interesting" enough to add to your travel section?

Well, I’m always open to take what I find interesting for my readers. I usually focus on everyday life (and that’s a very wide angle) besides arts, a bit of history and entertainment. Anything that locals do, etc. and might get the visitor’s attention. Your ideas will be very welcome.

By all means, find that perfect mufalelatta, but don't leave without also doing one of the cities POBOYS!!! It's a southern staple and so so good. I'd recommend the fried oyster or fried shrimp poboy before you leave that wonderfully city. Have FUN!

Oops! I didn't read this message on time, but I will definetely try it next time...probably in the Summer. And yes, I tried to buy a mufaletta at the Central Market, but they didnt have any at 3 pm on Saturday and didnt open Sunday...I just can't believe they turn customers away...anyways, I went to the Napoleon house...and tried there...I think it needed some more salami and cheese.
