i d like to ask if it is very dangerous to climb on mt. fuji in mid-may. in lonely planet it is said, that the paths are not open and the mountain huts are closed as well. is this true?

It is not recommended and you have to inform the local authorities in case you need rescuing. Read this before you decide to go:

Well Japanese says "the one is full who hasnt never climbed on fuji, but who wants to climb again is a 2 times fool". It means that it is very difficult to climb on Fuji by yurself, it is very cold there, you should expect snow and usually it does not worth it , maybe it will be easier to take a fuji bus tour. U can see Fuji only 20% of time a year, becouse usually it is very cloudy. I was lucky, I saw Fuji without clouds, it was nice but I wouldnt climb by myself.
