| Kuala Lumpur | Batu Caves with stroller Posted: Sat April 26, 2008 05:02 PM UTC
Hello,
I will be in KL for 3 days starting 6 May.How easy is it to visit Batu Caves with a 2 year old in a stroller? Can we see the caves without having to go up the stairs? |

Hi, I fear, thats not a good idea, as you will have to move up all the stairs without any help by escalators etc. However, good luck to you and your family!

HI!
Not to pour cold water, but Batu Caves aren't the best place to be bringing babies and young kids as you'll need to climb 128 steps to get to the top where the caves are. As already advised, there are no elevators or escalators. If you do not wish to climb, then what you'll pretty much see are the souvenir shops, the flight of stairs along with some small temples on the side (really nothing compared to the real thing up in the caves) and of course, a view of the limestone cliffs.

I went up there this Feburary. I counted the steps, it was 260. Stroller is impossible I would say, especially in the humidity of KL. Place is Okay. Also, you will not be able to see the actual cave from the bottom. there is a Giant golden statue in the front. That could be interesting. Here is a photo I took of that statue http://www.flickr.com/photos/94088826@N00/22939289

We have done it ourselves with a 3 months old, 6 years and a 5 years old (even though the younger two stayed with my mother downstairs). I definitely know what you are talking about. If your 2 years old is the only one then you can probably take turns and take her upstairs by carrying her. Leave the stroller at the gift shop downstairs with the promise that you will come back to purchase something. They are fairly nice and most probably will watch it for you.
I do agree with all the other people who have replied to your post that there are a LOT of stairs. Frankly speaking going up is much easier than coming down. My six years old child, four months pregnant siter-in-law and me being twelve weeks post partum have done it. I guess it's not impossible. If you want to explore other small temples (like the ones of Kumbhakarna etc) on the ground level, you do need a stroller. Don't worry about the monkeys. Their interests toward you is only reciprocated if you pay attention to them. Do carry water with you, but in a backpack. Don't flaunt your potato chips or other food items at them. I have seen people irritating monkeys only to be sorry later. Tips: while climbing back down, don't look beyond ten stairs ahead of you. If possible try going on a cloudy day or during a time of the day when the sun is not so strong. Also remember, Batu cave is not known for it's cleanliness. If you are like me, carry a lot of baby wipes. Hope that helps.

Thank you all for your helpful input. We will attempt to visit the Batu Caves and take turns carrying our 2 year old.Let's hope the people at the gift shop will be kind enough to take care of our stroller on the way up.I really don't want to miss seeing the caves so we'll give it a try.
Thanks again.
