| Rome | nice quality hotel in Rome that won't totally break the bank Posted: Sat April 26, 2008 08:16 AM UTC
Hi,
I am wondering if anyone can suggest a hotel that would be a solid 3-4 star in Rome that is within walking distance of many of the major tourist sites? The trip is planned for the end of September and is for two women who are in their 60's. If anyone knows of any reasonably priced hotels, I would appreciate that. Many thanks Jim |

In my opinion the hotells in Rome are not the best solution. You can find much nicer places to stay, using the B&B and apartments system. The price is much lower and the quality much better, and you can see Rome more like italians do.
Service in hotels are not on the top in Rome and conditions are offen below of those stars they own.

We stayed at the Mercure near the Colosseum in December.
It probably meets your criteria. Check my Rome page.

Just got back from Rome. Don't let location be your deciding factor totally. Almost everything is within walking distance. I stayed at a 5 star on the Via Venetto - Ambasciatori Palace. It was nice because the location was quieter in the evening - still used ear plugs to sleep - but quieter than where we visited most nights. Also the bath rooms were great which was a priority for me. Breakfast was included and was good.
There are metro stops throughout the city so if walking is an issue check into staying near one. I talked to several people while there that were staying in apartments that were very happy with their accommodations. Whatever you decide know that Rome is very walkable. It looks huge and widespread on a map but (with the right shoes) is very walkable.

Two B&B's I would recommend if you choose to go that route are:
Hotel Flavius: located just minutes from the coliseum. Has an awesome terrace and view of Rome. Also provides a wonderful organic breakfast. Very clean and the owner is extremely helpful. B&B Barberini: great location! Just minutes from Trevi Fountain, lots of shopping all around. It is actually an apartment- very large and has a refrigerator which was stocked with complimentary bottled water. The owner was also extremely helpful. (I have a tip on this one in my Rome pages). Both hotels were around 100-120 euros/night which is very reasonable for Rome. You can look them both up and book on venere.com Have fun!
