Phuket Is ocean choppy in May?
Posted: Sat April 26, 2008 02:59 AM UTC
Yes, me again!

We were planning a Phi Phi Islands day trip and also a Sea Kayak trip from Phuket when we go early May.

Have been told that the ocean starts getting pretty choppy from end April/early May. Last year we went in July and the ocean looked was pretty untidy then! Hubby can get a little on sea sick side....

Perhaps it might be more pool-time & shopping!

Thanks in advance, Sam

Unfortunately the ocean has already turned quite choppy this year. For your hubby most of the boat operators supply seasick tablets. It would be better to get them in advance so that he can take 1 first thing in the morning before departing.

Otherwise stick to the pool and enjoy your shopping :))

Sam, I'd say you have quite a good chance of choppy water in May when going to Phi Phi. However, the kayaking trips will be okay if you do them in Phang Nga Bay because the island of Phuket shelters the water over there. If you need a recommendation for a fantastic kayaking daytrip, let me know.

Any reliable kayaking recommendations would be gladly accepted Quero :)

As far as Phi Phi goes, p'haps we'll see when we get there. Although, a couple of seasick tabs, a fast speed boat, perhaps the worst of it will be over before we know it...

Maybe you're right. But it depends on how easily seasick your man gets! The trouble with speedboats isn't getting there, it's staying on the boat while it's anchored. Small boats bob around a lot more than big ones, you see. And even snorkeling can be a problem for some. I had a scuba student two days ago who was violently sea sick from just the motion of his body being rocked by gentle waves while resting on the surface. Who knows, though? You might get lucky and be here during a time when the winds are calm.

My guess is that we will go kayaking this trip and will just have to come back earlier in the year next time when the waters are calmer. that would be a shame, having to come back again to do the things we missed, hahaha!

Thanks for your help :)

VTers are here to help, Sam!

If you think you need a change of scenery while you're on Phuket but find it too choppy to go to Phi Phi, you could consider a road trip over to Krabi province (where Phi Phi is located). The drive itself is beautiful, and Krabi is quite nice (I like Ao Nang). It has a very different feel from Phuket with a more laid back pace.

Have wonderful holiday!

Hello...The slower ferry ride might be better for your father. It is slower but no less fun than a speedboat..I actually prefer the ferry to the speedboat...The speedboat can be extremely bumpy and I actually experienced 3 people becoming very sick from the speedboat bump and a number of others were physically upset but not sick...As your dad suffers from seasickness I would advise you all to go via ferry...Ferries are fun too....!!
