www.nationalrail.co.uk for train times and fares.

Cardiff to Holyhead takes a long time: 5 hours plus. Single (one-way)fares 15GBP in advance, 62.90GBP standard.

London (Paddington) to Cardiff takes around 2 hours, single fare from 24GBPin advance (depends on time), standard single 79GBP.

www.nationalexpress.com for coach times and fares.

Takes 3+ hours from London Victoria, from 5GBP single in advance.

Irish Ferries and Stena Ferries operate out of Holyhead.

http://www.irishferries.com/fares/irl_gbr/index.shtml takes 2 or 5+ hours, foot passenger 35 euros return.

http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/routes/ takes just over an hour on the fast ferry to Dun Laoghaire, 23GBP return.

You might consider flying from Cardiff to Dublin instead. Booked well in advance, this could be cheaper and will certainly be much faster.

www.aerarann.com fly Cardif-Dublin. Fares depend on flight date and time.

Dear J,

Actually my folks have booked themselves on a flight from London to Dublin, however I was hoping that it might be more enjoyable for them to do Edinburgh-Cardiff-Holyhead-Dublin, but now it seems just too long consdiring also that they are nearly in their 70's and I think they would have disowned me if they had to go unknowningly through this. So now it will most certainly be Edinburgh-London-Dublin. Only good thing that has come out of it is that I know there are wonderful people in this world like you, who selflessly and even knowing how ignorant some people are choose to assist by giving their time, and expert advice. And yes, you have greatly added to my knowledge of the Geography,of your part of the world.

Thanks a million.

Ranjit

You're welcome!

But yes, your parents would not have been very pleased with you at all......it's a long and tiring journey by train or bus and ferry. Distances may look small on the map, but UK public transport is both expensive and limited.

I hope they have a lovely visit. Feel free to ask more forum questions/email me if they have any other issues.

I agree with Leics (for a change!). Doing a Cardiff/Holyhead/Dublin run might be good if it is part of a week long tour, but not the best thing to do in one go, especially when those involved are in their 70's.
