New York City Amtrak ticket (Newark - New York Penn Station)
Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 09:38 PM UTC
I read somewhere that the Newark - New York Amtrak train ticket is also valid for the air train at Newar Liberty Airport. This means you don't have to buy two tickets (Amtrak + air train), only one (Amtrak). Is this information correct? And how much does the Amtrak ticket cost? Thanks!

These sites should hopefully answer your questions:

If calling from the US, all calls are toll free:

www.pathrail.com - 1-800-234-PATH
www.njtransit.com - 1-800-626-RIDE
www.amtrak.com - 1-800-USA-RAIL

Carmen

No, you were misinformed.

Newark Airport is its own station which is different from Newark Penn Station in downtown Newark.

I'm not sure why you would want to use Amtrak for this route when the NJ Transit ticket would be 1/2 the price.

Not sure if you could use your Amtrak ticket on the air tran... but Amtrak tends to be MUCH more expensive than NJ Transit, going anywhere.

Based on my experience I'm pretty sure you'd save money using NJ Transit instead of Amtrak and paying for the air train separately.

Here's my itinerary (from Newark Airport to Penn Station, Manhattan, NY):

Take AirTrain to Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station.
• At Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station, take a NJ TRANSIT or Amtrak train to New York Penn Station.
• From New York Penn Station, connect to the New York City Transit subways 1, 2, 3, 9, A, C or E.

So, according to you, the NJ Transit train is much cheaper than Amtrak, is that it? Thanks for the information, I really need to save as much money as I possibly can in this trip.

Yes, NJ Transit is much cheaper than Amtrak--take that one from Newark Liberty into Penn Station.

See the websites you have been given above for pricing: www.amtrak.com and www.njtransit.com. The prices will vary depending on the time of day and day of the week.

There is no cost for the Air Train that will take you from the airport terminal to the airport train station and you can buy your ticket at the train station. The ticket from the airport train station into New York Penn Station is $15 http://www.panynj.gov/airtrainnewark/
