Kiev Paul McCartney Concert - June 14th - Independence Square
Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 08:44 PM UTC
My wife and I may splurge and make a quick trip to Kiev to see McCartney. I assume Independence Square is large enough to hold many people. I also see that there are some hotels approximately 1km to the southwest.

What hotel do you recommend for me and my wife? We want a blend of high quality at the lowest cost.

Is is safe to walk from the hotel to the square for the concert?

Is there places to eat/drink in the square or between the hotel and the square?

Any information that you can provide to us will help us make the decision to visit Kiev.

I have stayed at Hotel Kreshatik and indeed it is only a few metres away from the square and as mentioned there are many eating places off the streets around the square

You may be happier renting an apartment and I highly recommend it. Higher quality and lower costs (something to appreciate after buying those plane tickets, eh?).

I've stayed at Hotel Rus a couple of times and I suppose it is as good or better than most. But the rooms are small with single beds (two single beds slid together to make queen bed). It can get noisey and busy during futbol games (stadium almost attached to it). There are some good views from rooms in front. It is in walking distance of Independence Square but not a quick walk.

There are plenty of restaurants in Kiev but they are not open 24 hours. Another advantage with an apartment is you have your own kitchen and refrigerator.

Kiev is safer than most major cities of the world. But watch for pick pockets especially in Independence Square. And if anyone wants to share a wad of money they found on the ground with you just ignore them. Also, carry a few one hryvnia notes handy to give to the street kids so they leave you alone.

Go! Kiev is beautiful and you'll love it! Have fun!
