General Information about Eau Claire Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 06:35 PM UTC
Hi folks,
I am probably going to spend nine months next year in Eau Claire, and was looking for some basic information.
1- What are the general daily life expanses in the city (Sandwich, meal in a mid-range restaurant, Coke, Pizza, bus ride, etc....)
2- As Wisconsin is near the Canadian border, is it feasible to visit Montreal. Is there bus links, how much does cost the trip???
3- Any additional information about the city, and any other comments are just welcome.
Thanks,

Some answers to your questions:
1) Here is the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce website: http://www.eauclairechamber.com/CWT/
Sandwiches are probably going to cost anywhere between $4 to $8 USD. Expect to spend around $10 to $15 at a mid-range restaurant plus drinks.
2) Eau Claire is no where near Montreal. It is probably over 750 miles between the cities. Train and bus transporation is tough. If you are going to travel anywhere you will probably have to travel through Chicago (visit here this is a great city)
3) Check out the website I listed above.
4) If you are going to be here in the winter months it will be very cold with lots of snow.

1) Agree with the previous post. Another usefull site is the Eau Claire city government website, http://www.ci.eau-claire.wi.us/home.php.
2) The closest large city to Eau Claire is Minneapolis-St. Paul which is about 80 miles west. Chichago is 320 miles to the southeast. Buses and train service is limited in most of the US. Your best options if you decide to take a trip to Canada is to fly or to drive. Toronto is about 850 miles away and Montreal is about 1150 miles away.
3) Eau Claire is a small college city, population about 65,000. Although they do have public transit, it will be very limited. Bus and train service to other cities will be limited to the larger cities near Eau Claire such as Minneapolis-St. Paul, Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago. As far as I can tell there is 1 commericial flight to Eau Claire. It connects you to Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Thanks a lot for your information. I am still thinking about the possibilities. What I am sure of so far is that it will be very very cold (especially for a Tunisian used to sunny walks at least 300 days a year, and never experimented temperatures less than 1°C).
In general do you think that a stay in Eau Claire can be interesting for me, and what is the budget to expect per month (room and board will be arranged).
thanks

I'm guessing you are coming to Eau Claire to attend school? I personally think living and attending school at UW-Eau Claire would be a great experience. You will see a side of the US most foreigners will never see or experience. And as noted, if you get board and need a little excitement you can goto several medium to large cities which are only hours away.
As for a monthy budget, it would all depend on what you like to do and how much you'd like to spend. Probably $500 a month would be a comfortable budget. But if you like to go out alot and yes Eau Claire does have alot of bars that cater to the university, you should budget more. Or if you want to take a few weekend trips to other cities you should budget more.
