Yep you need a Visa, two choices: Apply through the VN embassy in your country or get a travel agent here to organise a Visa-on-arrival (you can only get this if you are coming in by air). If you check Hientonkins pages she shows what you need to do.
If you are planning a side trip to Cambodia then you will need a multi entry visa.

first check out if you are in the list of exempted countries for visa to vietnam or not

they are
thailand
brunei
laos
malaysia
singapore
indonesia
south korea
japan
norway
finland
sweden

if you are out of these countries then of course you NEED a visa to enter vietnam. you will now consider to do it with vietnam embassy abroad or to do 'on arrival'. my suggestion is to do ON ARRIVAL VISA which is less expensive, fast and easy. try to search for a suitable vietnam agency handling this service

good luck

hi, does this mean (please excuse my ignorance) but does this mean I need a visa if I am from Australia but am first travelling to Bangkok and then after a few nights flying to Hanoi? I ask because it was said you are exempt if you are in thailand. ( did not say thai resident ) I am Australian with Aussie passport.
