| Berlin | train question dresden - vienna Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 11:24 AM UTC
I have another train question -
after dresden, we want to take a train to vienna. right now the fare i'm getting online is 221 euros for 3. just want to know if there is a cheaper way to do this - like buying the portion from dresden to ?? border town between Czech/Austria and buy another ticket for the portion within Austria. i checked bahn.de and there are some special tickets 57 Euro for 3 (but to prague only). we are on a tight budget so if you have any suggestions, please let me know. thanks. |

You could buy these specials to Prague and normal tickets from Prague to Vienna (~ EUR 31 per person). You can buy them already at Dresden station from the counter.

Seat reservation is recommended.
A completely different option is bus. You could take the bus from Dresden to Vienna and pay only 45 Euro (max, other fares available) per person. The bus leaves Dresden Central Railway station 11.30 pm and arrives Vienna 6.30 am. Saves you an overnight. www.berlinlinienbus.de

If it's really necessary is difficult to answer in advance. Esp. without knowing the travel date and time. With 3 you can buy a family seat reservation from Dresden to Vienna. EUR 8,00. Seat reservations are totally independent from your train tickets. Apart from the fact that you'll need some ticket(s) covering the route when traveling. You can make this reservation in Dresden or also any other staffed railway station before you'll arrive in Dresden. Night bus. You only save on the overnight if you can sleep more or well in a bus. Otherwise you'll be totally knocked out on the rest of the arrival day.

No peak day. But if you want to be on the safe side that you can sit together you may consider to invest the EUR 8,00 for the seat reservation. Empty single places are much easier to find than 3 empty seats next to each other.
These trains, coming from Berlin, are however more busy between Berlin and Dresden than from Dresden to Prague.

No. Buy you can buy 1 ticket for 3 persons. That's allowed because than you're part of this party. Thus no third party. Very important: you have to bring the printout AND the credit card you used to pay for the ticket. Only in combination of both an Online-Ticket becomes valid (otherwise it would be too easy to make a false ticket using some software at home).
