Dubrovnik Day Visit off Cruise Ship
Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 06:32 AM UTC
My parents are visiting via a cruise ship and wish for me to find out what should get up to for the day in Dubrovnik. Any suggestions will be appreciated, they are an older couple around 70.

If your parents are in good health their age should be no barrier to enjoyming a day in Dubrovnik.
Should they wish to "walk the walls" of the Old Town they will encounter many steps, will need sensible foowear and sun protection - including hats.

But will it be a full day? Do you know whether they will have to make their own way into the old Town from their Port of call (many larger cruise ships dock at the close-by main Port in Grusz; some anchor off shore and provide a service by tender for passengers to reach the shore.
So - transportation between ship and shore could cut their time down but there is plenty to do just in the old town.
It may be enough to wander through the narrow streets, pop in to some of the churches, art galleries and museums; sit for a drink and to absorb the atmosphere, have lunch.

Should time permit they could take a trip by water taxi from the little Dubrovnik Harbour to a nearby island ( Lokrum is about 10 minutes away and is a protected site of natural beauty.)

Have a look at the Dubrovnik Travel Guide Pages on VT for more information and ideas for specific things to do - just put Dubrovnik in to the Destination search, top right of the page.

P.S. The Old Town gets rather crowded on days when cruise ships arrive and hundreds of passengers converge at the same time but Dubrovnik is - for me another 70 yo. - unmissable.

They will love the place. Its small enough to just wander and enjoy getting lost among the streets and marveling at the restoration after all the war time damage.

The best thing to do is climb up onto the town wall and walk around it, the views are superb. I appreciate an older couple may not want to do the whole circuit but if they can manage any part of it, it will be worth it. From there you can see the old and new tiled roofs and imagine the extent of the damage wrought on this wonderful city.

I think they will find enough to do without leaving the city. It is an old walled town with only a couple of gates to the outside. If it is in summer they will find it gets quite hot and also the roads are very dazzling - white polished stone where the feet of centuries have walked.

They will find many cafes and restaurants just to sit and have a refreshing drink. Also there are churches, a monastery and a cathedral which off a shelter from the heat as well as the obvious historical interest.

Hope they enjoy their time.

Hi, It depends how many hours they have. They should start in the Old Town, much to see walking the streets, this is the main attraction of Dubrovnik and you could easily take 5 or 6 hours, if fit enough walk at least a section of the old city wall, fantastic views. Have lunch or coffee down by the old harbour. Check out Dubrovnik pages of VT members who have replied, you will get a good idea of what is available.

There is no need to take a tour sold on the boat.

Good Luck,
Mike
